Simplicity

Growing up my parents had this little flip calendar somewhere in the house - it was nothing fancy, just a variety of colored cardstock paper, and words on each on page, typed in old typewriter font, no fancy pictures, no fancy printing press, no fancy binding mechanism - just 2 rings and a wooden dowel.

The words were always something encouraging, a verse, or a quote that placed our focus back on our hearts treasure. One for each day of the year.

But it got me thinking, how something as little as an old flip calendar, that has been sitting for the last 40+ years on counters, moved from one house to another - repeating its same words day by day, year after year, yet never getting old, in fact, I appreciate the sight of that old flip calendar and its simplicity.

I think it is the simplicity of its basicness that draws my heart to it. It is not showy, or even anything that looks like it holds any value at all. Yet it remains a timeless treasure. They still have that old flip calendar, and when I visit, I like to read it and touch my fingers across the old pages. I find its words more valuable and important as time passes by.

Of course, while growing up, I did not value it or see it as a treasure. But it was in my home, and I passed by it daily, and I read it. Day by day, year after year - the words were getting planted in my heart and my mind, though they would be long forgotten as I went off and chased the world.

But as I found my way back to my roots, back to home, back to me, back to Him, I found myself drawn to that old flip calendar - and so I found one for myself, for my home. And now, my children flip that counter calendar nearly every day, making sure the date is correct, sometimes they even write the words out in their journals for copy work. And day by day it is planting seeds in their young minds.

And as they get older, they too, may remember the simplicity of the little pages and the little - yet impactful words on them. It just goes to show that what we place in our homes, can reach far beyond the walls and far beyond time.

I've been wounded by words deeply and nearly bled to death holding onto them. Believing them as truths and placing my identity in them, just because someone else placed them in my hands. The simplicity yet depth of words is something that I am realizing we far too often take for granted. In a fast-paced world, to slow down and really hear is a journey in itself.

As you flip through a vast and endless array of words in this world - may you seek and find the simple ones - the ones leading you to the simplicity that is Christ. The ones revealing His Word, His Truths, and what He says about you!

Gifting you simple yet profound treasures to hold in the depths of your heart.

I was going to give up writing. But every - single - time that I step away from a pencil, I find myself seated right back at the lines.
